Never mind, find the answer through google.  The solution to this:

> libtool: Version mismatch error.  This is libtool 2.2.6b, but the

> libtool: and run autoconf again.

is 

  reautoconf -fi

and then start over.  At least the make has been running for several
minutes now and seems happy.
