how to get the native format of DB

Hi all,
Another question. Is there a way to find out what the native sequence format
of a database is ?
Something like 'showdb -only -format tsw' would be useful for instance.
I was just thinking about the possibility of using emboss as a generic tool
to fetch sequences in Bioperl.
But, in order to create the sequence objects in Bioperl, you need to know
the format you are dealing with. Therefore I was looking for a way to
retrieve that information, without writing 'yet another config parser'.
Any suggestions ?
Marc
