I do say no :-)  I agree with your general view of one or a few people 
leading this effort.

*My* personal favourite(s) for this or these persons is someone new, 
not from the present core, or at least someone new in a strong role. My 
take is that we all have too much stake in the present codebase to be 
able to truly take a step back and look at it emotionless and without 
bias. I think we'd be excellent advisers but bad revolutionists. At 
least as far as I'm concerned.

Also, new blood is good. All of us will move on at some point and new 
people will need to be there to pick up the baton.
