My concern is just don't we invite the next bug report here by having 
overengineered this. I'm sure it's not going to be long before the next 
one goes in, adds documentation and code sample (which is good!!), but 
forgets to escape all the variables.

The @@VERSION@@ would obviously obviate the need for escaping variables 
(but someone's got to write this few-liner ...)
