ahh, someone needs to help write this in a wiki so we can have a checklist
for devs (on wiki maybe), I don't know that everyone (at least me) knows
which operators are no-nos for 5.4...

We intend to, with this bugfix release, but I'd like to raise the issue
for the 0.9 dev or 1.0 releases.
