Something I want to suggest as an aid in debugging is to add an
additional (optional) debugging level to the debug method.
  
  # the following will only be printed if ($object->verbose >= 5)
  $object->debug("debug output", 5); 


I got the idea from Spong (http://spong.sourceforge.net/), where this
turns out to be an invaluable aid in findings bugs/problems.
