I'd suggest that you start by looking at the pages of the
OMG's Life Science Research group:

They've got some standard IDLs which you might like to
take a look at (although I haven't actually tried implementing
them myself yet).

A PubMed search on "CORBA" also reveals a few recent
papers which might send you in the right direction.
