The reason it is the way it is: by separating collections from simples,
we can precisely define the inputs to a service - a single object, a
defined number of objects, or an undefined number of objects, as well as
any combination of these (e.g. a collection of sequences plus a single
sequence as a service input). This could not (unambiguously) be defined
with Phillips suggestion without adding another parameter to the service
signature... which then becomes six or a half dozen.
