Another fink user suggested to even extend the testing for ppc and  
intel in new config file, so it looks like:

if test "`uname -a | grep Darwin`"; then
   if test "`uname -a | grep i386`"; then
     CFLAGS="$CFLAGS -O1"
   else
     # is this the correct setting on darwin-powerpc?
     CFLAGS="$CLFAGS -O2"
   fi
else
  CFLAGS="$CFLAGS -O2"
  fi
fi

Would that cause any problems with emboss?
