In theory you're quite right, you don't need X11 on such a system. There are ways that some OS/distribution setups can fool the --without-x switch though; so you may find that in practice that compilation with X11 is the path of least resistance. That is one of several areas of configuration that I'll be overhauling in the near future. Alan
