The LGPL shouldn't stop them from doing that. In fact, neither would
GPL, or AFAIK any of the open-source licenses - after all, the
ability to modify existing code is one of the whole points about open
source.
What GPL would mandate (but LGPL doesn't) is that code linking to it
that is redistributed also have the source code available.
