Then I'd expect it's really old. The only way to really know the
version, then, is by querying the package organizer you are using (RPM?).

The easiest solution is to just install a newer version. From the
error you got and no __version__ attribute, I'd just plain assume
it's too ancient. No reason not to just update to the latest version
and make everything happy.
