Because it is (supposedly) easy to calculate them at runtime.

Yes. Which one though. Also, at this point the piece of code is used in 
exactly 2 places (a couple months ago I copied&pasted the code to 
calculate the CRC for references for bioperl-db ...).

Anyway, I think it'd be helpful.
