Bioperl: text vs. bio seq recognition

I'm trying to make some web forms more useful by trying to recognize the content
of a text entry box as either language (ie. a text query), a DNA sequence or a
protein sequence. This is because people insist on entering sequences in text
search boxes. So instead of just politely telling them there are no matches it
seems better to notice what comes in and modify the search accordingly.

It's pretty straight forward to spot DNA but does anyone have any advise on how
to differentiate reliably between a text query and a protein sequence (or maybe
a DNA sequence with ambiguities). Somebody out there must have done this
before.....

thanks

Tony
