Yes, there is already a version field setup, current values are 1.4,
1.5,  live (CVS source) and unspecified. Anyone with sufficient
admin rights should be able to edit the field values for example
to add 3.0 (e.g. I can).

If you don't have anyone at BioJava with these permissions, I'm
sure the OBF can fix that (I don't think I can do that).
