I think the docbook stuff may need fancier checking because I've
discovered some evil interactions between the old-ish Xalan which is
part of JDK 1.4 and some versions of the XSL stylesheets.

As the bundled Xalan has the same package names as standalone Xalan-J
it complicates things. We're going to have to detect the evil-doers
and print a helpful message. Or better still, try to set
java.endorsed.dirs to include the location of a working Xalan.

I'll fetch myself a more venerable copy of Ant to make sure it
degrades gracefully in future.
