Another solution would be to make an extension of RangeLocation that
contains the merged locations. This gives the rapid processing seen with
the current product of the union method with the ability to recover the
component locations (with hopefully only a small increase in size). The
union will still produce CompoundLocations where needed just the merged
bits will be in the new class (MergedLocation?)

Unless there are major objections I think I will code this up.
