Correct, this is now mandatory.  

Gbrowse_moby is forgiving when it receives output data from non-
compliant services, but is API-compliant by always sending an
articleName when it passes data to a service (regardless of whether or
not that service checks it).

Newer versions of Taverna are *not* forgiving at all - both input and
output must have articleNames.

I don't know about other clients...
