Peter, 

This hasn't been a problem on the BioPerl list in the past, in fact I find it happens to be a great way to make sure one reaches the right audience.  We do in general request that the person wishing to post contact us prior to actually posting, but Russell has been a longtime contributor so I personally don't see it as a problem.
