OK, some digging around has resulted in a way to "make" as a normal
user. You need to have

- SHELL=/bin/csh   ( /usr/bin/tcsh doesn't work )

  and

- nothing in LD_LIBRARY_PATH


Looking at the 'par' output (strace for irix), doesn't bring much. The
only strange line is 

   244mS[  2] : ioctl(1, __OLD_TCGETA, 0x7ffeca70) errno = 25 (Inappropriate I/O control operation)
