One possibility might be to use the Jazz zoomable interface toolkit
developed at UMD (http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/jazz/) as a foundation.  At
the highest level boxes would be connected to one another, a level lower
would show more details about data and whatnot and even lower one might
get into the algorithmic details.

As a bit of an aside, to what extent does (the gui version of) GCG meet
these needs?  What do people see as its primary flaws?
